Undergraduate Student in Biological Sciences and member of the Laboratory of Biology and Conservation of Mammals and Waterfowl (LECMAA), Institute of Zoology, Diego Miranda Urbina, began during the month of January project called " Abundance, Distribution and Social Behavior of small cetaceans and their interactions with artisanal fisheries The Coast Region De Los Rios' . The project is supported by the prestigious International Cetacean Society (Cetacean Society International) and is aimed at determining the abundance of small cetaceans in Los Molinos and Fog, along with characterizing the behaviors that develop on our shores. Similarly, quantify the interaction of these mammals marine artisanal fisheries in the creeks of Los Molinos, Fog, Chaihuín and Bonifacio. The project will be supported by Dr. Roberto Schlatter and Dr. Hector Pavés, both academics at the Institute of Zoology and LECMAA members. In addition to the participation of Carola Valencia (BSc Veterinary Medicine), Rasma herem (Environmental Biology) and Marine Biology students who conduct their professional practice and research seminars within the framework of this project (Carla Mellado, Fernando Cornejo, Katty Riquelme, Jorge Gomez, Carlos Velazquez, Juan Pablo Molina).


Diego Miranda student last semester of Bachelor of Science Biology, completes its undergraduate thesis in aggressive behavior of females of southern fur Guafo Island. The year 2008 completing an internship in the project Aaustrales Birds and Marine Mammals, under the direction of Dr. Rae Natalie Prosser Goodall in Acatushún Museum, located in Estancia Harberton, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. During his time carried out literature studies on cetaceans, seals and birds, review of beaches in search of stranded animals, cleaning and preparation of bone specimens, data entry, armed skeletons to his collection; and bilingual visits the museum. Similarly, he has participated in several projects related to population and interaction quantification of sea lions and fishing activities in the north and the fjords of our country. In 2009 he participated as Project Partner Coastal School Museum: Impressing our senses to Keep Spreading Our Biodiversity and Conserving Our Biodiversity, Island Life Guafo Milestone, both funded by the Directorate Extension University Austral de Chile.
